University Dismisses 11 First-Year Students For Attending Hotel Party

Officials at Northeastern University announced they dismissed 11 first-year students for violating coronavirus protocols. The students were part of a study abroad program and were staying in two-person rooms at a Westin Hotel in Boston because of the global pandemic.

The students were caught hanging out by university staff members last week and were not wearing masks or social distancing.

"Those people who do not follow the guidelines — including wearing masks, avoiding parties and other gatherings, practicing healthy distancing, washing your hands, and getting tested — are putting everyone else at risk," Madeleine Estabrook, senior vice chancellor for student affairs, said in the statement. "Cooperation and compliance with public health guidelines is absolutely essential."

The students were told they must vacate their hotel rooms after getting tested for COVID-19 by the university.

The students were informed they would not receive a refund for the semester, though they can challenge the school's ruling to dismiss them. It is unclear if they will be allowed to reapply for the spring semester.
