Sean McVay Goes Full Fanboy For Bill Belichick In New Super Bowl Mic’d Up Footage
by Matt Keohan
It’s no secret that Sean McVay is a Bill Belichick fanboy. The 33-year-old Rams head coach has publicly expressed his gratitude for Belichick, revealing that the legendary Patriots coach “ has basically texted me after every one of our games ” this season and takes great joy in the NFL coaching circuit acting as a “fraternity.”
NFL Films released mic’d-up footage from the Super Bowl and McVay’s admiration for Belichick bordered on ‘fanboy’ status. Check out the 30-second clip below.
Below is how the conversation went down, as transcribed by For The Win :
McVay: So much respect for you.
Belichick: Likewise, you’ve done a great job. OK.
McVay: So great — you always do though. You always do — you know, you’re the best, man. So.
Belichick: (Expletive), you’re taking over, buddy.
McVay: No, no, hey — the way that you guys are able to shift your identity and really still be able to figure it out, I mean, week in and week out, it’s unbelievable.
McVay: Really, so much respect for you and the way you do it, man. You’re what’s right about coaching.
Belichick: Thank you.
McVay: Preciate you, coach.
After the game, McVay bluntly admitted to getting out-coached by Belichick, who he claimed did an “outstanding” job. It’s refreshing to hear a humbled coach, but it may be beneficial the next time around for McVay to learn to hate his opponent.
